Welcome to Storebælt – Storebælt
I’ll be crossing this bridge, the second longest suspension bridge in the world, this week. Four times. Which means about £120 in tolls. Ouch.

Tale Torrent – Ye Olde Days of Weblogging // Seemingly Unconnected // Katy Lindemann
Katy gets all reminiscent about the early days of blogging. I was there, on the edges and occasionally sticking my oar in, and can vouch that it really was like that. Happy days.

I have no idea how the physics behind this works. At the moment, I’m fielding quite advanced science questions from Tom (what makes the sun shine? where did the first animal come from?), so I’m tempted not to show him this video as I think my brain will explode if I try to explain it in language for a (bright) five year old.

Consultation on proposed increases in fees for statutory plant health services provided by Fera
None of this is a surprise, although a 600% increase in import fees is a bit eye-watering.

BBC News – Maastricht bans cannabis coffee-shop tourists
I think it’s easy to overstate the number of drug tourists in Maastricht. The cafes are concentrated in a couple of areas (and some have been moved by authorities to the edge of town) and the city doesn’t have an all-pervasive drug culture – certainly much less than some other Dutch cities (including Amsterdam). But the vast majority are German or Belgian, so I’m not sure this ban is really going to make a whole heap of difference.

Government guidance on the place of creationism and intelligent design in science lessons
Tempted to wave this under Headmistress’s nose. Feeling slightly annoyed that Reverend is teaching creationism to 5 year olds in our school, but no mention of evolution. Or science.
