Nightingale numbers fallen by 95% over 30 years. But there's one in the tree outside my door, singing its lungs out.

Teenager exchanges his iPod for a Walkman. "It took me three days to figure out that there was another side to the tape. That was not the only naive mistake that I made; I mistook the metal/normal switch on the Walkman for a genre-specific equaliser, but later I discovered that it was in fact used to switch between two different types of cassette."

Book to go with David Reynolds' excellent Radio 4 series. Combines some current affairs with history, so whether this book will stand the test of time is questionable. However, it looks to be the best popular history of the US currently available.

Being from the Bognor area, I have many memories of the Picturedrome, including watching the Back to the Future trilogy in the wrong order (it was very confusing) and being pelted with sweets by some girls sitting half a dozen rows further back. I also remember the mechanical lantern in the tower being illuminated, certianly in the early 70s when we used to pass the cinema on the way home from visiting my grandmother on each and every Friday night.

Possibly the best act on this week's Jools (aside from Regina Spektor, who is amazing), although it seems that they are a better studio act than live – but it was ever thus for anyone with synths.
