I’m afraid that shamus is a word, Graybo. It means “private detective” or something like that.
Bumflaps. I knew my ignorance would be shown up by someone.
Anyhow, around our way Seamus means Seamus – either a fat Irishman or my parents’ cat.
Two “proper” spellings of the same name (the English cognate is “James”)…
The Irish Gaelic spelling is “Seamus”; the Scottish Gaelic spelling is “Seumas”.
